Vintage Movies + Musicals: Hello, Dolly!

If you know me in person, you will know that I absolutely love musicals. I have a Pandora station devoted to showtunes. And sometimes I have an insane urge to pas de bouree down the street.

One of my favorite musicals is "Hello, Dolly!" with Barbara Streisand. It's so jovial and fun and the songs are beyond catchy (you might recognize them from Wall-E). The dance numbers are also super fantastic as they should be since the movie is directed by none other than the amazingly talented Gene Kelly!

The costumes in this 1969 movie are WONDERFUL. The colors are very reminiscent of the late 60s, lots of tans, muted pastels, cream with brown and black. I forgot to screencap the outfits before I returned it to Netflix, but perhaps you can find some around the internet.

Costume designer Janie Bryant takes you behind the scenes onto the Mad Men Wardrobe Truck! A vintage lover's dream! Look at all of those vintage inspired dresses! My favorite ensembles are Peggy's... the little ascot ties, The Toggle Coat, all the cute cardis paired with plaid skirts... definitely my favorite.

Why do we no longer unexpectedly dance in coffee shops a la Jean-Luc Godard?

I adore this sort of dancing. It's silly and simple and you feel as if you could just jump right in and snappity snap get into the groove of things.

My all time favorite dance scene of course is Audrey Hepburn in "Funny Face" when she is in the "Beatnik" bar in Paris. Oh, Audrey, how I love thee!

Judy Garland had one of my favorite singing voices, I loved even how she spoke. And you must remember, they were not able to digitally enhance singing voices back then. Absolute pure wonderful talent! I ♥ Judy Garland.

I love this song so very much and also quite like the stop motion commercial, wish I could be in this commercial! Wouldn't it be great if they did a type of stop motion commercial with an Audrey Hepburn theme? *hehe*

My Directing Debut: Saturday at Griffith Observatory

Well, it's not very vintage related I know, however one of my monthly goals (all right, it was March's goal) was to purchase a video camera, and so I have at last!

I spent most of Saturday evening splicing clips together and adding the soundtrack. I've never created a video in my life, so sorry it's a bit shoddy. The quality isn't the greatest, I think I compressed it too much. But, I hope you enjoy!

Also, for those who have made videos on Youtube, any advice? I am so very excited to start making little films about vintage and even to get my toes wet with a new creative medium, but my thoughts and ideas are really too scattered. Thoughts? Ideas? Advice?

Rita Hayworth in "Cover Girl" Opening Dance Number

"The Show Must Go On" from Cover Girl. I absolutely adore their outfits in this number and how they "undress" into that sparkly gold number. This is one of my new favorite vintage classic movies btw. If you have not seen it, please do ASAP! It's so super cute and has some of the prettiest costumes! And I just love Rita Hayworth, such a beautiful redhead!


This clip also includes about 2 more minutes of the movie afterwards and you can see even more stage costumes! Ooo polka dots!

Zooey Deschanel music video for "In the Sun"

Oh darling Zooey, why can't more little girls idolize you instead of that tarty Britney Spears? This video is so cute, no? And are those Peter Pan collars I spy with my little eye? *love*

Alice in Wonderland, A Silent Film Version from 1903

The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations.

Screen Gems of the 1930s: Myrna Loy

Today my fashion inspiration is the beautiful 1930s silent films and actress Myrna Loy. With her exotic looks, Myrna was often typecast to play the vamp or portray Asian/Eurasian women during the early parts of her career. (Interesting!) Her acting career spanned nearly 4 decades! Myrna was married four times but never had any children (a pity, think how outrageously beautiful her offspring would be!). She is quoted to have said "Some perfect wife I am... I've been married four times, divorced four times, have no children, and can't boil an egg."


I would very much love this entire ensemble!

Vintage Tunes: The Times They Are a Changin' by Bob Dylan

One of my favorite Bob Dylan songs. "The Times They Are a Changin'" was released in 1964 (US) and became an anthem for the youth of the 60s (hippies). You know sometimes you just like a song and you're not quite sure why? But you could listen to it over and over again and it just tugs at you a little? That's how this song is for me.

"The Grinch Song". I love the movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" since I was quite a fan of Dr. Seuss books (they helped when I was learning English ^_^)


"Carol of the Bells" from Home Alone. When I was younger, I obsessively watched Home Alone, I thought it was so hilarious!


"Silent Night" sang by Elvis Presley. Silent Night is one of my favorite winter/holiday songs.


"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" sang by Judy Garland (I loove her version of this!)


Christmas Medley by the Carpenters. My Mom and I both really loved the Carpenters and always listened to their Christmas special CD.
